# Add an outbound route

> Send outbound calls through the right carrier by matching a dialed prefix or pattern to a route you create.

Create an outbound route so Get2Dial knows which carrier sends a given outbound call.

## Before you start

<Snippet file="prerequisites-carrier.mdx" />

## Steps

<Steps>
  <Step title="Copy the carrier's ID">
    In the left navigation, select **Carriers**, open the carrier this route will use, and
    copy its ID.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Go to Outbound routes">
    In the left navigation, select **Outbound routes**, then select **Add route**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Name the route">
    Enter a **Name** describing what it matches, such as "UK mobiles".
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose how it matches">
    Set **Match type** to **Prefix** to match on the start of the dialed number, or
    **Regex** for a pattern. For prefix matching, leave **Prefix** blank to match every
    number.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Paste the carrier ID">
    Paste the ID you copied into **Carrier ID**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Set the priority">
    Enter a **Priority**. Lower numbers are tried first — use this to set a preferred
    carrier with a fallback.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Adjust the dialed number, if your carrier requires it">
    Use **Strip prefix** to remove digits before dialing (for example, a leading trunk
    code) and **Add prefix** to prepend digits your carrier expects.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Save the route">
    Select **Save**.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Verify

<Check>
  The route appears in the **Outbound routes** list with **Active** set to **Yes** and the
  correct carrier. Place a test outbound call that matches the route's prefix and confirm it
  connects — see [Verify your connectivity](/voice/test-your-connectivity).
</Check>

## Common problems

* **Two routes both match a number.** The route with the lower priority number wins; if
  priorities are equal, the one created first is used. Give overlapping routes distinct
  priorities.
* **Calls fail even though the route looks right.** Confirm the carrier the route points to
  is both **Active** and **Approved** — see [Connect a SIP carrier](/voice/connect-a-carrier).
* **You can't delete a carrier.** A carrier with an active outbound route pointing at it
  can't be deleted. Remove or repoint the route first.
